The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him,
“Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign!
But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and
three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days
and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Tuesday
26
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he
broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup, and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of
you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Wednesday
The Death of Jesus
46
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c]
lema sabachthani?”
(which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?”).[d]
47
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,
put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49
The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special
Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses
during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies
taken down.
The Burial of Jesus
57
As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea,
named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58
Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given
to him. 59
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and placed it in his
own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of
the entrance to the tomb and went away.

The Passover and the Festival of
Unleavened Bread
4 “‘These are the LORD’s
appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their
appointed times: 5 The LORD’s Passover begins
at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. 6 On the fifteenth day of
that month the LORD’s Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you
must eat bread made without yeast. 7 On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no
regular work. 8 For seven days present a
food offering to the LORD. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do
no regular work.’”
The Guard at the Tomb

The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the
Pharisees went to Pilate.

The Ten Commandments
8
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10
but the seventh day is a sabbath
to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your
son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any
foreigner residing in your towns. 11
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that
is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the
Sabbath day and made it holy.
